Astrology Carnival: Fifth Edition

Welcome to the fifth edition of the astrology carnival!

Jennifer gets to hog the spotlight this time with her exploration into Vocational astrology posted at Saturn Return Can Bite Me. As a fellow Outer Planet Person (as Jennifer describes them, they are "people who have Uranus, Neptune, and/or Pluto aspects to the Sun, Moon, ascendant, or midheaven, or are heavily aspected in general."), this quote about OPP's from Donna Cunningham really stuck out for me: "Finally, after years of meandering, some transit sets off their 10th or 6th House or the Midheaven, and they find their calling. This transit often coincides with a re-evaluation of the life path, in which the individual changes to a nontraditional career." Back in the nineties - when transiting Pluto opposed my natal Sun in the 6th - I decided to become a writer. I had been studying advertising art in high school at the time, but it didn't offer the creative freedom I wanted. Sometimes I don't know if I chose writing, or if it chose me, but either way it feels like something I need to do in my life. And that quote definitely coincides with my experience.

The sixth edition of this carnival will come out around the middle of October. You can submit your blog article to the next edition of the astrology carnival using the carnival submission form. You can also email me (theknowitallastrologer @ your link (make sure you mention that you want it included in the carnival) or post it in the comments below.
Past posts and future hosts can be found on the blog carnival index page.

Eris in my chart

Originally uploaded by knowitall.
Knowing that Eris is currently transiting Aries, I was curious to see where exactly she would show up in my chart. And she showed up in an interesting place indeed: conjunct Mars and Venus in Aries, opposing Pluto in Libra, and trining Saturn (in Leo), Neptune and my ascendant (both in Sagittarius). It'll be exciting to explore how the Eris archetype shows up in my life.

I've been reading up on Eris a bit, and she isn't just associated with strife, but also with striving. As Hesiod said wrote about Eris: "She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbour, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbour vies with his neighbour as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men. And potter is angry with potter, and craftsman with craftsman, and beggar is jealous of beggar, and minstrel of minstrel." Eris may end up ruling of healthy competition in astrology and maybe even competition with oneself (as Monica on Friends once said, "That's my favorite kind!").

A little about the mythology of Eris:

She is the Greek goddess of discord and strife, which is quite fitting given that the discovery of Eris in our solar system has caused discord. Eris is one of Ares' attendants. How appropriate that Eris was discovered while transitting Aries, the sign ruled by Mars (the Roman name for Ares). She is the daughter of Nyx (Night). She delights in war and the bloodshed of men. She is given credit for causing the Trojan War.

hmm... based on this bit of information, it seems to me that at this time Eris is an important archetype for people to be exploring within themselves.

Pluto, Pluto, Pluto

Sometimes, I think that astronomy and astrology are a divorced couple who are fighting over their children - the planets. And, of course, Pluto is the focus of most of the fighting, since he is the problem child, the runt of the litter, the black sheep of the family.

That said, I don't think Pluto being demoted to a dwarf planet by astronomers will drastically alter astrology. Astrology has evolved over time and this is just another step in its evolution. It'll be interesting to see how things change and what new ideas are developed as a result of this, especially as astrologers explore the other dwarf planets. I must admit I'm most excited about Eris (they finally named it - yay!) and discovering what it will offer to astrological readings.
